Description Biography Continuing Education

First session in a two-part series, this webcast is intended for staff who possess an intermediate level of infusion coding skills or knowledge.

Do your coders and charge capture staff understand the difference between drugs administered to treat a condition and drugs administered for a procedure? This question typifies a common dilemma in which the orders and documentation are clear, but there's confusion over why drugs are administered. From this session, you'll learn how to determine the correct drug administration codes for infusions provided in the emergency and outpatient infusion departments, as well as how to make certain your code assignments and charges are fully supported in the documentation.

What's on the Agenda:

  • Intermediate-level review of drug administration CPT® coding hierarchies
  • Revenue and compliance impacts of common errors and omissions, such as unreported hours for hydration therapy
  • Commonly encountered National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) procedure-to-procedure (PTP) edits and medically unlikely edits (MUEs)
  • General guidelines for modifier usage, including modifier 59 and the newer X{ESPU} modifiers
  • Documentation best practices, along with common documentation gaps, plus tips for improving clinician documentation in support of infusion codes and charges
  • Case studies that involve common coding and billing scenarios in the outpatient infusion and emergency departments; specific services to be discussed include:
    • Hydration therapy
    • Blood administration
    • Intravenous infusion
    • Intravenous pushes
    • Subcutaneous/intramuscular injections
  • An examination of the audit findings for each case, culminating in corrected code assignments and charges
  • Time permitting, answers to attendee questions
